A playful halloween costume response to the basic bitch meme and its corresponding ironic Halloween costume.
As Instagram was tied to the development of the "basic bitch" concept, my 2014 Halloween costume included a dedicated Instagram account called @basic_bb. My costume consisted of clothes and accessories from my own wardrobe which fit the basic bitch stereotype, and in the accompanying Instagram I attempted to use references and language that I have used at some point in my own life.
By collecting the basic elements of myself and presenting them all at once as a public confession, I exaggerated and exposed one aspect of my identity. The intention was not to mock, but instead to make visible the multifaceted nature of women.
